I have over 30gb of available hard drive space, and over 800mb of memory, plus I am running OS X 10.4.11 (latest 10.4 update). The hardware is old, G4 Mac Power PC, however the stated requirements for v.5 were all exceeded.

Having huge problems with Safari 4.0.3 since this update. G4 with 1.6Ghz upgrade. Getting constantly spinning beachballs when Java is accessed on certain pages. Have to force quit. A sad disappointment Apple because this only affects YOUR browser. Firefox and Opera working fine. You guys are so wrapped up with Snow Leopard and iPhone that you don't care about anyone else that uses your products.

Intel MacBook Pro, OSX 10.5.7, Safari 4, Java already turned off in Safari prefs. System stable and everything working properly.
Install this Java update
Safari no longer goes anywhere. Crashed every time I attempted to go to any URL
Tried everything including repair permissions, Disk Warrior, trashing Safari prefs
In the end, I had to do a complete system re-install, omitting this latest Java update in Software Update. Everything now works ok again.

Still no 1.6 for PPC users.
Summary

As Apple states in the release notes, 1.6 is supported on 64-Bit Intel Macs only. This says, that Apple does not support other Apple-architectures anymore: We cannot expect Java-developpers to downgrade for all the future to 1.5 for just one specific OS. Weâ??ll loose viable applications due to the lack of support from Apple.
A remark to â??used for less than a month': Iâ??d like to use 1.6, but I cannot since it doesnâ??t exist for most of my machines. 1.5 works so far - but itâ??s not an excellent implementation, too.

I'm so pleased that Apple released this implementation of J2SE 5.0. At long last, I can access my bank account information without trouble. This has been such an inconvenience in the past. I'm very pleased with this update.
