Adobe Director (formerly MacromediaDirector) is a multimedia application authoringplatform created by Macromedia—now part of Adobe Systems. Itallows users to build applications built on a movie metaphor, with the user as the 'director' of the movie. Originally designedfor creating animation sequences, the addition of a powerfulscripting language called Lingo made it a popularchoice for creating CD-ROMs and standalone kiosks and web contentusing Adobe Shockwave. Adobe Director supports both2D and 3D multimedia projects.

What Is Macromedia Director Mx 2004
Director has a powerful scripting language called Lingo whichallows sufficient interaction with external files and certainWindows APIs that it has been used to mockup Graphical user interfaces andcreate prototypes of applications, as well as create self-runningKiosks on CDs and DVDs. It has also been used to author interactivegames with rich graphics and embedded QuickTime movies. Directorsupports many different bitmap, audio, and video formats. Builtinto the language are a suite of very powerful 2D bitmapmanipulation tools, referred to as 'imaging Lingo'. This subset ofLingo allows authors to perform advanced operations such as to bitblit. While a vast majority of users relied on the timeline for thedevelopment of their work, a number of expert developers begancreating stunning projects, especially games, that took advantageof the speed of imaging Lingo. These advanced projects used only 1frame on the timeline and the display, movement and behaviorloop(s) of memory-based sprites (rather than time-line based ones)were handled natively in Lingo. Director 8.5 added the ability toimport, manipulate, and display 3D objects. The 3D features arequite advanced, unusual for an authoring environment - and includesfeatures such as the ability to create geometry on the fly fromcode, hardware accelerated model display, and advanced lightingfeatures. It also supports vector graphics and 3D interactivity(via Shockwave3D). Since Version 6, Director has incorporated Flash animation filesand Lingo can be used to interact with Flash's Actionscript code for more control.
One of the most powerful aspects of Director is itsextensibility, which is accomplished through plug-in applicationsnamed Xtras. For example, there are Xtrasfor OS desktop manipulations (creating folders, files, icons, shortcuts, registry editing) and Shell control, dedicated textprocessing (RegX), PDF readers, and many more. Typically, in othermultimedia development environments an author who is faced with anew video codec that cannot be imported might be completelystranded; with Xtras, Director can be extended to be able to embedadditional media types beyond those that the stock version of thesoftware would allow. These can be created by users or purchasedfrom third party vendors. They are created using Adobe Director'sXDK (Xtra Development Kit), a C++ SDK. Unfortunately, Macromediasometimes needed to change the programming interface for Xtras fromversion to version of Director, requiring many third-party membersto either update their plug-ins or drop support of Director after afew revisions. Over time, many original third-party developersmoved on to other opportunities rather than incur the cost ofediting their code over and over.
For executable output, Director can export projects forembedding in websites using the Shockwave plugin. Shockwave files havea .DCR file extension. Other executable options for Director exportof projects is as a stand-alone application called a projector.Projectors can be built on Macintosh and Windows operatingsystems.
There are many other non-interactive formats that can beexported from a Director timeline, should one decide to exportanimation such as: animated gif, Quicktime, etc.
Comparing Director toFlash
The differences between these two products has been the subjectof much discussion, especially in the Director developmentcommunity. Extensibility is one of the main differences between thetwo, as are some of the sundry codecs that can be imported.Director has tended to be the larger of the two, but that footprinthas been part of its weakness. This weakness manifest into theerosion of Director's ubiquity as the leader of authoring tools, especially in the critical window of 1998 - 2000. The downloadfootprint of the Director Shockwave plugin was significantly largerthan the Shockwave Flash download footprint. Additionally,Macromedia partnered with distributors such as Dell, Apple, etc. tohave the Flash plugin pre-installed on machines for users, so thatthey would not be prompted to install any additional software. Atthat point in time (1998-2000), broadband internet access was notthe norm for most users, and the five-fold difference in size wascatastrophic.
History
Director started out as MacroMind 'VideoWorks', an application forthe original Apple Macintosh. Animations were initiallyjust displayed in the black and white of the early Macintoshscreens. At the time, many people couldn't understand why havinganimation on a personal computer would be useful and a big part ofthe battle for VideoWorks was simply getting credibility for why itwasn't just a toy.
The name was changed to 'Director' in 1987, with the addition ofnew capabilities and the Lingo scripting language in 1988. A Windowsversion was available in the early 1990s.
From 1995 to 1997 a competing multimedia authoring programappeared called mTropolis (from mFactory). In 1997 it was purchasedand buried by Quark, who had its own plans into multimediaauthoring with Quark Immedia.
